Creating Global Hot Spares

Global hot spares are disk drives that are available to automatically replace failed drives in a mirrored array (RAID 1 or RAID 1E). If you create two mirrored arrays on the controller, the hot spares will automatically replace failed drives in both arrays. You can create one or two hot spares per controller.

To create a global hot spare, follow these steps:

  1. In the left panel of the MegaRAID Storage Manager window (on the Physical View tab), click the icon of a physical drive that is not already part of an array/virtual drive.
  2. Select Operations >> Make Global Hotspare on the menu. The disk icon changes to a hot spare icon.
  3. You can also right-click the drive icon and select Make Global Hotspare from the popup menu.
