 Known Limitations or Problems with Current Release

• Release 3.08.27.0 cannot be upgraded from an installed and running driver with a prior version. This is due to the fact that a new service now controls the launching of the tray applet which breaks upgrade compatibility (only when older drivers are running). The system must be clean from prior BRCM 802.11b installations before installing 3.08.27.0. Future releases will be able to install on top of 3.08.27.0. For those systems that cannot be completely cleaned out, it will be important to edit the Windows registry:
  • Uninstall the old driver from the Device Manager (not from Network Connections)
  • Bring up Task Manager (right click on taskbar) and if BCMWLTRY.EXE is still running, kill it.
  • Remove BCMWLTRY.EXE and BCMWLCPL.CPL from %SystemRoot%\System32 (typically c:\windows\system32). If for some reason you are unable to delete BCMWLCPL.CPL, go into Task Manager and kill EXPLORER.EXE (it will restart itself) and try to remove it again. If the control panel was ever opened, explorer holds an open handle to the control panel which means it can't be deleted.
  • Remove any OEMxx.INF files in %SystemRoot%\Inf that mention the Broadcom 802.11b device or "bcmwl5.inf". These are the cached INF files the OS stashes, and should be one of the highest numbered OEMxx.INF files in that directory.
  • Delete the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\bcmwltry using regedit.exe. This removes the legacy mechanism for starting the tray applet.
  • Run InstallShield setup.exe from the release to install the driver files to the staging area, and to install the tray applet. If the Wireless card is already installed, you then need to go to Device Manager, and force a re-scan for new hardware, which will find the wireless card. Then select all the defaults which will then install the driver automatically from the OS staging area.
• Users should be made aware of how to properly use InstallShield. For optimal ease of installation
  • Run the InstallShield executable prior to hardware installation:
  • After InstallShield finishes, shut down the system
  • Install the 802.11b network interface card
  • Turn on system
  • Prior to getting WHQL approved .cat files you will want to be aware of the following steps during system bootup:
  • For WinXP:
    • Make use of all defaults in the New Hardware Wizard (select next and yes).
  • For Win2K:
    • Select next twice
    • Ensure that all check boxes are unchecked
    • Select next twice
    • At the digital signature warning screen hit next
    • Select finish
• To cleanly uninstall, users should be made aware of the application layer uninstall as opposed to uninstalling a device in the driver configuration tab (Properties:Configure:Driver:Uninstall). Users should follow the InstallShield uninstall procedure:
  • Click on Start Menu
  • Select the Control Panel
  • Select Add or Remove Programs
  • Select BRCM 802.11 Wireless Card (or your proper device string from the .inf file)
  • Select Change/Remove
  • Select OK
• When installing in a system that has never run the driver before, simply use the normal driver installation once the hardware is detected. If you are running BCM4301 A0 silicon in a system and wish to upgrade, it is important to install this new driver first then turn off the machine and upgrade the hardware. This will ensure smooth transition as 3.07 does not support the BCM4301 B0 board.
• There are some special instructions to be followed to obtain passing WHQL results:
  • When running WHQL tests, be sure to remove the Tray Applet.
  • As per MSFT WHQL guidelines, warnings will not prevent attaining a logo.

 What's New in the 3.08.27.0 Release?

• Added InstallShield to the installation process, separating the application from the driver/.inf installation method
• Added a service to launch the tray application. This allows new users to login to a machine setup for a particular domain, and gain network connectivity.
• Site Monitor now shows closed networks if you are associated to a particular closed network. All access points with the same SSID will be found within the Site Monitor list.
• Resume from standby no longer looses tray icon within the Windows tray.
• If the driver is disabled and the tray applet is launched, it will properly inform the user that the device has been disabled.

 What's New in the 3.08.22.0 Release?

• Fixed a bug in the driver where the number of access points the driver could see was limited to 14
• Reduced PLCP Header options to Auto and Long in the driver advanced tab
• Resolved small UI element issues
  • The icon for the tray application task was a generic icon and not one used from the tray application itself
  • The transmit and receive indications in the tray application did not match the MSFT system tray application

 What's New in the 3.08.16.0 Release?

• All Microsoft WHQL tests pass and on WinXP and Win2K
• All WECA tests pass.
• Full suite of diagnostics have been added to the control panel
• Win2K now has balloon notification on the tray application icon similar to WinXP

 What's New in the 3.08 RC8 Release?

• Fixed various bugs reported by external customers.
• 1c_kernel_call failed one variation on WinXP. This bug is resolved.
• 1c_gstat WHQL test no longer fails variations with a query to OID_PNP_CAPABILITIES for Win2K.
• Added balloon text for tray icon in Win2K.
• Fixed bug to disable activity LED when radio is disabled.
• Any error condition during initialization is now logged into the Windows Event Viewer Log.

 What's New in the 3.08 RC3 Release?

• For generation of WEP keys, the driver now counters weak key generation as detailed in the paper by Fluhrer, Mantin & Shamir. Hulton attacks were run against this defensive code to ensure the keys are not generated. This 802.11 WEP counter measure has also been called WEP-PLUS in various circles.
• Fixed various bugs reported by external customers
• Improved Win2K Tray Applet to be a more exact implementation of that in WinXP
• Fixed the EVM OID/IOCTL bug which prevented it from running properly
• Fixed issue where the tray applet is unable to change from open to shared authentication when the WEP key is HEX.
• Fixed WHQL bugs
  • WinXP Signability, WinXP CHeckINF, Win2K 1c_ginfo
• This release includes the BRCM tray applet extensions for:
  • Board diagnostics (two tests remain to be completed underneath the UI)
  • Site survey
  • Link status
