Intel PRO/100 Adapter Test Utility

NOTE: If you are looking for information to test Intel PRO/1000 adapters, you may find it here.

The DIAG100.EXE utility tests Intel PRO/100 family of adapters. It provides PCI configuration assistance and adapter diagnostics.

DIAG100 is designed to test hardware operation and confirm the adapters ability to communicate with another adapter in the same network, primarily confirming cabling. It should not be used to judge performance.

It can test the adapter whether or not there is a responder on the network while you run the tests. In order to do a thorough test, you must set up a second system on the network as a responder prior to starting a test.

DIAG100 operates under MS-DOS* versions 3.1 through 6.22. It will not run from a DOS window in a Microsoft* Windows* product.

Startup

  1. Boot to DOS.

  2. Navigate to the \TOOLS directory.

  3. Under DOS, type DIAG100, and press <Enter>.

The Diag splash screen appears.

Select an Adapter

If there is more than one adapter installed in the system, the adapter selection screen (below) is displayed. If only one adapter is present the software automatically selects that adapter and proceeds to the Main Menu (next screen).

The adapter names will also appear on this list if one of the adapters is present, however, the adapter data (address, IRQ, etc.) will be replaced by a message instructing you to use Setup version 1.X.

The speed/interface data on each line can have the following values: 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps or No Cable.

After an adapter is selected, Diag100 proceeds to the Main Menu. All of the actions taken after this screen apply to the selected adapter.

Main Menu

If a driver is already running, the Test Adapter selection will be grayed out. This condition will occur if you specified the adapter driver to load at boot-up.

View Adapter Configuration

The screen shown below appears when the View Configuration menu entry is selected. This screen describes various properties of the adapter.

If the adapter link partner (hub, switch, etc.) is NWAY capable, additional information for the link partner will be shown below Adapter Capabilities showing the speed, interface and duplex capabilities of the attached device.

You can view additional information on the PCI slot occupied by the adapter by pressing <F5>. This is primarily used for troubleshooting by Intel technical support.

Test Adapter Menu

The Test Adapter menu entry appears when Test Adapter is selected from the Main Menu

Test Adapter

Selecting this option brings up the test screen and begins the test. The results of the tests are displayed as each test is performed. If multiple test passes are selected, the results area contains a count of test failures. A list containing zeros mean that all tests have passed.

If you are doing a network test and the adapter cannot find a responder on the network, the Network Test will show an error message.

Display Diagnostic Log

To display the diagnostic log you can choose the Display Diagnostic Log option in the Test Adapter menu. Note: When running multiple passes, the log file will only log failures.

Change Test Options

This is the test setup screen. This lets you configure and select a test. Each option is toggled by selecting the selection and pressing <Enter> to change the option. The number of tests is simply entered from the keyboard in the appropriate box.

Set Up As Responder

This lets you setup the adapter as a responder so another system can perform the continuous network test. Selecting this brings up the transmit/receive screen. This will fail if the adapter does not have link.
